Hermann Karl Hesse (Wikipedia) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge, and spirituality.
In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature, “for his inspired writings which, while growing in boldness and penetration, exemplify the classical humanitarian ideals and high qualities of style.”
As I was drawn into the writings of Hesse, I learned that he was a young person’s writer. Perhaps it has taken me a long time to grow young, but he speaks to my spirit. I hope you enjoy this series of quotes and that he speaks to the young person you once were, the one still living within the deepest part of you.
Note: Hesse uses the word “man” instead of “person.” I make the mental translation for him and think he would agree.
I love Hesse as well. I recall him being quite popular in the 70's. I devoured all of his books back then.
Love this Joyce. I was very influenced by Herman Hesse too. I never considered him to be a young person’s author but I think you’re right. I was young when I read him and could easily comprehend his meanings. Thanks.
