Thank you for this lovely post. I worked as a self-taught landscaper for over fifteen years. I knew and understood my flowers/plants/trees by sight, but often only committed to memory their common names. I could spend the rest of my days learning their botanical names, which would be a lovely pursuit. But instead, I will likely opt to just enjoy caring for my faves. It's all good.

I've long tried to learn wildflower names ... either common or botanical ... and still they elude me. But, still, they fill me with joy.

I like flowers but not good on their names and of course I like a good bookstore but I love books

I've been working on names for decades and still am not good at them ... and, since this was a used book sale, I felt particularly lucky to find this book.

What a wonderful bookstore find! And I love your idea for a flower photo book. The world always needs more flowers.

Fascinating! And I love your flower photos! Have you thought about selling them on Redbubble? It’s free to set up an online shop and people can order them on products others create and ship. Go to https://www.redbubble.com/people/wendigordon/shop to out my nature photo shop and see what I mean.

Wendi, thanks for your note and the redbubble idea. I will check it out. Not sure I have the bandwidth beyond Substack, but love the thought.

It was unbelievably quick and easy to set my shop up and no ongoing work is required. I’ve made very little money from it, but had fun looking through and uploading my photos and can add new ones anytime in less than ten minutes!

Thanks ... a tiny book, mostly flowers, a little poetry, gratitude for the gift of art and beauty that came slowly into my life.

I count the flowers

as I look out my bedroom window, along my walk,

within my day.

I cannot make one of these, yet they are here for my delight.

In bud,

bloom, or

faded glory

they speak the magic of creation

and the promise

of renewal.

Most important line is 100 million or so years ago. Put in perspective, the earth is fine --it is humans who will become extinct at their own hand. Another 100 million years or so there will be flowers and rainforests and perhaps some other life form to photograph it all.
