Songs as Journal Prompts
Anything that prompts your thoughts and feelings can be used as a journal prompt.
Recently I realized that one effective way into my heart was watching America’s Got Talent auditions, especially the YouTube “best of” collections. Invariably, some young performer brings me to tears. It took a long while before I recognized that those feelings were full of potential for journaling.
The audition of the above song prompted a flood of tears and finally sent me to my journal. Lily Meola’s voice, song, and her story (brief synopsis included with above video) went straight to my heart and launched an exploration of why the lyrics, “Don’t give up your daydream,” created such an outpouring of words and feelings.
The journaling that followed allowed me to recognize that I was feeling bereft, lacking a dream, and questioning why I had never had the courage to follow a big dream. A lot of feelings were about age and fears, as well as the life-choices I’ve made. Perfect journal fodder.
Gradually, as often happens in journaling, light began to shine across the shadow and I recognized that I am following a dream, one that does not involve fame and fortune but still wakes me up in the middle of the night (example: this post) and still makes me want to explore ways to help others follow their own daydreams.
What song might help you journal more deeply?

Great idea! Songs are filled metaphors, and for many of us, they symbolize times in life.
Joyce, as often happens, your post resonated with me. I've pondered the same questions and came to the realization that helping others live their best life is a pretty fantastic life outcome. It doesn't mean we stop. It's an ongoing pursuit--and your work touches and challenges others to stretch each and every day. I bow to you in gratitude. 💕
