What an adventure we’re on! We have a campfire and a bunch of companions gathered with marshmallows toasting, ready to listen to our tales … all set up and made ready for us by our trusted friend Substack.
Safety may be one the most basic of human needs … however, our spirits long for adventure and the company of kindred spirits. And, here we are.
When I joined Substack, I expected nothing more than a platform … an easy shell where I could put my writings. I actually didn’t even expect to find anything I would want to read here and I definitely did not expect to make friends with some incredible writers. Next to owning a bookstore with a fireplace and a sleeping cat, this may be the best dream ever.
It seems funny now because I am a high-expectations, optimistic person. Normally, new projects leave me somewhat disappointed because they always fall short of my Pollyanna expectations. I’ve expected a pet rock experience more times than I care to talk about.
Not Substack though. Substack delighted me from my first Office Hours experience, chaotic though it was and continues to be. The generosity, creativity, and brilliance here amazes and delights me. This is far better than being a kid in a candy store.
This week I will celebrate my first anniversary with a complete make over. Gratitude will still be my siren song, but helping writers navigate Substack will be my main delight. To launch this new part of the adventure, my first Substack Field Guide will post on Wednesday.
This Field Guide is free to all subscribers.
While future Field Guides and membership in the Substack Explorers’ Club* will be reserved for paid subscribers, this one is designed specifically for Substackers who are just getting started. Each Field Guide will be packed with best practice examples and reviews of all the elements and features Substack sends our way. I am always amazed at the creative ways I see writers using Substack so it will be a delight to write about them.
(And, if you’ve developed a creative Substack spin you would like to share, please email me at jwycoff@gratitudemojo.com.)
*More about this in the Wednesday post.
