The ONE most important difference: a president for ALL Americans
And, the ONE most important outcome: PEACE
Almost 250 years ago, we set out on a great experiment to form a new nation, a new democracy … of the people, by the people, for the people. Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has repeatedly said,
"I pledge to you to be a president for all Americans.”
Donald Trump has not made a similar pledge. I am biased in my choice of candidates, however, that pledge is the one difference I hold most important. I don’t want any Americans treated more or less fairly than I am treated; I want justice for all and am against favoritism, cronyism, and nepotism. I believe those are fundamental principles of democracy. While they may not happen perfectly, they are always the goal.
A week from today, we should know who the 47th President of the United States will be. My deepest sorrow as a citizen of this great country is how badly we are divided. And, my greatest fear is that the results of this election will worsen that divide, regardless of the candidate who gathers the necessary 270 electoral votes.
Therefore, my deepest hope for all of us is PEACE.
Next week, while some will celebrate a win, we could wind up with all of us losing something we have fought long and hard for … our identity as one nation … one democracy.
Wise as they were, I doubt that our founders ever thought this new country would become a trusted leader on the world stage, a beacon of freedom in every corner of our planet, and the world’s oldest bastion of democracy. However, here we are and we’re about to experience perhaps our biggest test:
can we democratically vote for our candidates of choice
and accept the outcome as part of the process of democracy?
While I plan to work for my candidates of choice up to the last minute, I am also in the process of making my peace with either outcome, even while that peace includes continuing to work towards a better democracy. I hope you will, too.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this most challenging election and how you will make peace with the outcome.
Today on Fresh Air Dave Davies interview w/ a journalist (named Henzinger I believe) was on America First Policy Institute. I'm sure you know of it but it was petrifying. They've kept a low-profile while 2025 has not. If you have a chance to listen to the episode, please do so. NPR always has in episode files, after the date of airing, I believe.
As I just said on another blog being popular doesn't mean you can run a country, being a racist so and so shouldn't be able to run a country. It is a hard job, not one everyone can do and many who try fail some because they are more interested in being popular and liking the sound of their own voice. If you don't vote you shouldn't complain it was your choice to not vote so shut up and deal with who ever is trying to run the country
