I remember well when you had that experience and I have recalled it often as I ponder how we got here. If you have not yet listened to Rachael Maddow’s two special podcast series, I think you will find it a fascinating piece of the generation to generation history that lay underground for years, but never snuffed out. Deja News and Ultra. Where ever you get your podcasts or at MSNBC.com. Hidden history we should have known but we’re never taught.

Thanks, Lynne ... I haven't been doing many podcasts recently but Maddow is so special, I'll check those out. Hidden history is turning into a passion ... should replace all that boring dates and generals approach to history that made my eyes glaze over in school. Many hugs.

You have made a accurate, albeit sad, observation.

So much hate in the world, I don't understand such hate but hate is around us everywhere, I remember my Mum telling me that hate is such a strong word.

What a powerful story. I give you so much credit for having the courage to even try to make

a difference in the face of so much rigidity and intolerance. What we're seeing today is nothing new, it's just been magnified. As you say, the saddest part would have surely been seeing such vulnerable kids internalizing so much fear and hatred.

Whew! I never heard your account of that info gathering trip before. I understand your concern for the kids. My worries about children growing up to be dangerous haters are sparked every time I see news of family separations and deportations at our southern border. Kids coloring swastikas is depressing, but kids in cages is not exactly the American way.

It seems like there's almost a continuum between those who can hate so easily in one area, transitioning to another.

How brave of you. My heart raced reading this.

I live in a the suburbs of Los Angeles. About ten years ago a SWAT team came to clear out a gang that moved in to a happy looking home--yellow and white ranch house, with flowers in the front garden. Turns out it was a white supremacist gang who rented the home and wouldn't leave until threatened by an armed police SWAT team. Scary.

I'm typing through tears and am filled with emotion. I admire that you went to the compound and believed you make a difference. I relate to your naivety in thinking such a book could impact the hatred. And I fear you may be right...that those young children coloring swastikas grew up to spread hate...and all of this breaks my heart. Thank you for trying and for believing in love and goodness.
