“I do believe in an everyday sort of magic -- the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone.”
― Charles de Lint
I was about three-quarters finished with this week’s Sweet Peace when the phone rang. Caller ID showed a voice from the past: one of my dearest friends and travel buddies from decades ago. I knew she lived here in Santa Barbara but our friendship had suffered a hiccup and fallen into one of those time warps so I hadn’t tried to make connection when I returned to the area.
Now here she was on my phone! I almost screamed her name. The woman on the other end of the phone sounded taken aback, uncertain. She asked if I was Joyce Wycoff and I said yes. Then there was another pause. “Joyce Wycoff from (name of company where we worked together).” By this time I’m garbling away in excitement and she joins in. Then we both became a little speechless realizing there was something else going on.
Turns out it was one of those odd synchronicity things. A few days ago I completed my mail-in ballot (please vote!) and noticed an invitation for poll workers so I called the number and left a message asking if they still needed workers. My long-lost friend happened to be the co-ordinator of poll workers and was just responding to my call, not realizing who I was.
Once we got that sorted out, we both got excited and made plans to get together after the election. And, suddenly this unexpected happening made me think the Universe was giggling and I haven’t stopped smiling so I put aside the planned post and decided to just tell this story. Maybe it’s gratitude; maybe it’s just synchronicity, but it seems like more things like this are happening on this gratitude practice journey.
May everyday magic smile on you this week.
*** The Sweet Peace series began in January of 2022 as a 52-week commitment to finding peace with food and body and has gradually expanded to include all aspects of my life. Archives of the first 44 weeks are stored on JoyceWycoff.com.
