Thanks Joyce - You've given another clear example of A) how complex the environmental issues and their balance are and B) how numerous the potential solutions are because of that complexity.

Pretty cool, huh. Think I'm becoming a whaleophile ... is that a word?

Lots that I didn't know here. Good stuff. Fun personal fact - the only time I've personally seen a whale, a large humpback - was on my way to camping on one of the Channel Islands you mentioned.

How fun! I see the islands whenever it's clear enough but still haven't been whale watching. I'm going to fix that soon.

I found this really interesting we don't often realise how important a creature is to the world

If you've never seen Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, it's the "save the whales" movie. I watch it every few years, since it's the most lighthearted of the original Star Trek TV crew series of movies. They take a pair of whales from the 1980s to the future, to begin repopulating 23rd Century oceans with whales.

Bummer that the whales' pathways, communication and breeding are being messed up by the sonic disturbances from the windfarms, and it appears to be killing a lot of them.

It's a call for us to do something to help them. Some of us may not be in a position to lessen our dependence on fossil fuel, but we can support the whales.

Dunno why they started calling oil fossil fuel, since it's derived from broken down organic matter that doesn't go through a fossil stage before becoming oil. Yep, in the long term it's actually a renewable resource.

The wind farms are strange to me because the amount of oil used in production of these giant turbines which are rather short lived and not very recyclable when they are out of service. They're messing up the birds as well as the whales.

I'm all for saving trips and being more efficient with the natural resources, and I totally want those guys with the big private jets to learn how to ride share. 😎

Joyce, here's something ironic (and pretty much just non sequitur): whale poop is good for the atmosphere, but cow farts are bad.

Now I'm going to have to add that to my list of things to contemplate today ... along with your piece about burning the ships which is tucked away at the top of my READ file. Enjoy your Saturday.

You might want to wait a day or two to read my piece. I didn't mention farts OR poop!
